I’guana go to Heaven

For what happens to the children of man and what happens to the beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts, for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.
– Ecclesiastes 3:19-20

Our beloved iguana named Gomez passed away. Gomez was a very famous iguana at the Iguana Conservation Project located at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. He was loved by the staff, by the many Belizean children that visited the grounds on their school trip and by the hundreds of tourists that come to learn about the project. Gomez was 16 sixteen years old, as old as the project itself. Because of his interaction with the iguana handlers and growing up around many visiting people, he was very tame and calm. Adults and children could feed, pet and hold him. He loved being scratched on the back of his neck.

I first got to know Gomez some 3 three years ago when I started working at the hotel. I was also hired part time to come in only once a week to care for them and to do iguana tours. He and I became very good friends and when things were slow I even took him out for walks on the trail or down to the Macal River to get food for the other iguanas. Certainly, it was a sad moment when I heard about his passing after an unimaginable event. As the story goes, a dog made its way into the large iguana cage. Gomez would have been a perfect target since he was the largest iguana in the cage. He succumbed to his injuries hours later. Five other iguanas also were killed during the attack. The dog, maybe a pit bull, was seen leaving the cage. No one has seen the dog since.

I visited his tomb today, I took some flowers for him I’m sure he would have liked it and he would have wanted to eat them. A funeral was held, Unfortunately I could not attend because of work. They certainly gave him a kingly burial. Rest well buddy.
